Dr. Kevin Yao is a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of brain and spine tumors, as well as complex conditions of the brain and spine.
His approach to care is centered on a clear goal: maximizing each patient’s quality of life while restoring and preserving neurological function.
Advanced Training in Neurosurgery and Oncology
Dr. Yao earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons before completing his neurosurgical residency and chief residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. He then completed a fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
His advanced training established the foundation for a career focused on complex brain and spine tumor surgery, spinal oncology and stereotactic radiosurgery.
Leadership in Neurosurgical Care
Dr. Yao previously served on the neurosurgical faculty at Tufts University School of Medicine and Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
During his time at Tufts, his leadership roles included Co-Director of the Brain Tumor Center, Director of Spinal Oncology, Co-Director of the Boston Gamma Knife Center and Director of the Spine Radiosurgery Program.
Today, Dr. Yao serves as Chief of Neurosurgery at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at Mount Sinai, where he remains involved in medical education.
Experience, Research & Education
Throughout his career, Dr. Yao has contributed to neurosurgical research, education and scientific literature involving brain tumors, spinal tumors, stereotactic radiosurgery, trigeminal neuralgia and complex spinal surgery.
He has authored and contributed to peer-reviewed research, book chapters and presentations within the field of neurosurgery. His teaching experience has included the training of medical students and neurosurgical residents at both Tufts and Mount Sinai.
A Patient-Centered Approach
For Dr. Yao, successful treatment is about more than addressing a diagnosis. His goal is to help patients maintain their neurological function, quality of life and overall well-being throughout their care.
That philosophy also influences his interest in incorporating wellness, mindfulness and stress reduction into the patient experience.
